Here is how to use Scientific Notebook to create the Conic Section annimation.

  1. In Mathematics Mode type the expression (x,y\sin \frac{\pi t}{2},y\cos\frac{\pi t}{2}) and choose Compute > Plot 3D Animated > Rectangular.
  2. Type the expression (y\sin 2\pi x,2+y\cos 2\pi x,y) and drag it to the plot frame.
  3. Click the plot frame and choose Edit > Properties > Items Plotted.
  4. Item 1, Variables and Intervals, set -6 < x < 6, -8 < y < 8, 0 < t < 2.
  5. Item 2, Variables and Intervals, set 0 < x < 1, -5 < y < 5. Edit the colors to be transparent.
